WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

We are a group of 12 people from Guildford who have come together to resettle a refugee family from the Middle-East to our local Guildford community via the Government's Community Sponsorship Scheme. We are excited about this!!

Project Manager

Anna

Overseeing the project and ensuring we as a group are ready to receive a family in line with all the Home Office requirements. Works at The Lighthouse, a social enterprise charity in Woking whose mantra is kindness, believe and hope, something that she believes should be spread far and wide into our communities.

Benefits Lead

Jon

Supporting the family in understanding and navigating the universal credit and benefits system. Passionate about helping displaced refugees become integrated into the community so they can have the best chance to thrive.

Finding volunteering opportunities in the local community and work being vital to the families integration into the local community.

Treasurer and Fundraiser Lead

Jez

Product development director in technology sector.  Experienced in managing large budgets and cost control & reporting.  Fundraised for Lands end to John o Groats bike ride for cancer care. Helping the family to manage a budget and oversee allocation of groups funds.

Language and ESOL Lead

Jane

Has many years teaching adults and experience working with interpreters.

Being moved by the plight of refugees, Jane was due to work with Samos Volunteers last year, but this was cancelled due to Covid. Starting the community sponsorship came about after discussing with Anna that surely, we did not have to be in Samos to be effective and we could set up something locally.

Health Lead

Emma

Responsible for overseeing the health needs of the family. Helping them to understand and navigate the NHS system.

A senior nurse in the health service with over 25 years experience, currently working in an emergency department as an autonomous practitioner. Motivated to help families meet their physical and mental health needs.

Kerry

Overseeing the educational needs of the family. A qualified teacher with a particular interest and specialism in teaching children with special educational needs. Motivated to help families who have often overcome so much, find a safe place to make a fresh start.

Housing Lead

Sarah

With many years experience volunteering in homelessness support and liaising with councils and agencies, including Chair of Winchester Churches Nightshelter for over 10 years.  Anglican priest, Vicar of Shalford & Peasmarsh just on the edge of Guildford.

Safeguarding Lead

Charmari

Ensuring policies and procedures adhered to and key person for safety and well-being of the family. Has previously worked with vulnerable children, young people and adults from various ethnic backgrounds in different countries. Passionate about helping families from diverse backgrounds.

Jane, former journalist, probation officer and English teacher, Andrew a retired engineering draughtsman and mobility worker for the visually impaired.

Works alongside Health Lead. Experienced executive leader of INGO, focussing on international programmes, including safeguarding. Has lived overseas and is motivated to help and empower families and communities across cultures.
